New York’s Public Theater and WNYC is doing Romeo and Juliet on the radio, and this production aims both to entertain and to show that language need not divide us. All the characters shift seamlessly from Spanish to English and back again. It stars Juan Castano and Lupita Nyong’o, and was co-adapted, and entirely directed by Saheem Ali.
In this segment, Brooke and Ali discuss the process of interweaving the two languages in the drama and the challenges of making the play legible to monolingual listeners.
